Frankie95 Video Roundup: Sunday

This post is a part of a day by day recap of the Frankie Manning 95th Birthday Festival. You can learn more about Frankie Manning at the event’s website or go to his personal website www.FrankieManning.com. You can order DVD’s of this event at www.Frankie95.com.

Sunday started with more classes. Here’s Daniel Heedman and Åsa Palm re-capping their “Fast Lindy” class at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts

Clips from the 2 pm class taught by Sing Lim at 424 West 34th St.

Elsewhere, Lindy Hopper spread the love all over New York City

The evening started with the full scale stage show “Ambassador of Swing: The Frankie Manning Story.”  No video filming was permitted during the show, but you can order the DVD’s which will probably feature an academy award winning editing job.

After the show ended, The Boilermaker Jazz Band played a set.  This was followed by the Semi-Final round of the World’s Largest Jack & Jill contest.  60 leads and follows out of 191 leads and 241 follows were chosen to advance to this round.

The competition was DJ’d by Ryan Swift.  You can find the music for that comp and the rest of his set list from that night on his website.

Jonathan Stout and His Campus Five featuring Hilary Alexander played the all skate of the contest and followed with their own set.  Check out this jam that broke out during their version of “Dark Eyes.”

Only two performances during the band break.  Natasha Oiumet and Patrick Szmidt were a last minute addition because of some drop outs.

Stefan Durham and Bethany Powell

Finally, both the Boilermakers and Campus Five took the stage to play”Flying Home” for the finals of the Jack & Jill.

The finalists in order of appearance were:

  1. Hurley Francois & Gina Helfrich
  2. Sharon Davis & Mike Roberts
  3. Carl Nelson & Lily Matini
  4. Laura Glaess & Tommy Blacharz
  5. Natasha Ouimet & Gontran Galinier
  6. Alice Mei & Max Pitruzella
  7. Moe Sakan & Marcus Koch

Also check out this cool clip from the stage of the final all skate.

The contest was judged by the audience, but a clear winner couldn’t be determined from the top three.  An impromptu dance off had to be done. It included:

  • Laura Glaess & Tommy Blacharz
  • Alice Mei & Max Pitruzella
  • Moe Sakan & Marcus Koch

The song, naturally, was “Jumpin at The Woodside.”

The final winners were Moe Sakan & Marcus Koch.

The Boilermakers and Campus Five went on to trade songs and jam a combined set.  Here’s a jam breaking out to them doing “Lester Leaps In”

They were eventually joined in by the next band leader, Evan Christopher.  He led a small jam band after Campus Five and The Boilermakers retired for the evening.  He was joined by Jake Sanders, the guitarist for The Cangelosi Cards and Gordon Webster.

Here’s a clip from towards the very end of the night.
